Course Description
Course information provided by the 2024-2025 Catalog. Courses of Study 2024-2025 is scheduled to publish mid-June.
In this seminar we will read and discuss a range of theories and methods that have been employed by scholars in the interdisciplinary area of Near Eastern Studies. After giving attention to the historical development of area studies programs and their current status and relevance, we read a wide range of influential works in Near Eastern Studies. Literary theory, anthropology, historiography, archaeology, visual studies, gender theory, and political science are a few of the approaches, methods, and theories we will explore. Mid-semester, we will turn our attention to questions of pedagogy to prepare for a service-learning project. Students will design a study unit on a Near Eastern cultural artifact for local high school students. Continuing in our exploration of engaged scholarship, we will examine the use of new forms, such as the graphic novel to represent Near Eastern studies scholarship. We will also explore new developments in digital humanities research methods.
